Mon 9am-3pm MN State Capital & Cathedral Tour
The motorcoach will leave on Monday at 9:00am and return at 3:00pm.
Spend your day enjoying the beauty of two of the finest examples of Beaux Arts architecture. The Minnesota State Capitol is one of the Midwest’s most spectacular buildings. Inspired by the 1893 World’s Columbian Exposition in Chicago, architect Cass Gilbert was determined to design a building in the classical style, but with all the modern conveniences of the time. The stunning result is a towering white marble dome, fluted columns, graceful arches and commanding statuary. Gilbert would go on to design the U.S. Supreme Court building in Washington D.C.
At a cost of $4.5 million, the Renaissance Revival-style building opened to the public in 1905. When it was discovered that parts of the exterior marble were deteriorating and posed safety concerns, the Capitol underwent a $310 million repair and restoration project from 2013-2017.
Cass Gilbert’s design of the dome echoes the Basilica of St. Peter in the Vatican. The Capitol is more than 430 feet long, from east to west. From ground level to the top of the dome’s lantern measures 220 feet — about the height of a 20-story building. Inside, the building has more than 300,000 square feet of floor space, or about 5 million cubic feet of space.
On the way to the Cathedral you will have the opportunity for lunch on your own.
Up the hill from the Capital is the fourth Cathedral of Saint Paul, that was the dream of Archbishop John Ireland, and was designed by E. L. Masqueray. The Cathedral of Saint Paul was designated as the National Shrine of the Apostle Paul by the Vatican and the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops on March 25, 2009.
